ON THE WORLD STAGE
When Bluescope Steel needed a custom crate system to transport 6,000 square metres of steel cladding panels to China they called on Pace Pallet Services. The panels were destined for the $61M Australian Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo and each curved panel was unique. They had to be unloaded in sequence to enable the construction crew to complete the cladding of the monstrous 50-metre high building in just 8 weeks. Pace Pallet Services designed customised treated pine timber crates that were an exact fit for the mixture of curved steel panels. The crates could safely take their weight without being unnecessarily over-constructed. They could be stacked, forklifted, and were designed to make it easy for the construction crew to extract the panels on-site.

SOLVING A CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGE
“We appreciate the assistance we received from Pace Pallet Services. They designed and manufactured all of our crates under the one roof. Despite the enormity of this project they met all of our deadlines and the project went like clock work. This was a very exciting and dynamic project to be involved in. It was as high a profile as you can get architecturally apart from the Olympic Games”, says Steve Halpin from Bluescope Steel. Referring to how we helped them safely ship 6,000 square metres of steel cladding from Australia to Sydney for a landmark building project. “The main objective was to vertically stack and pack the panels just once; to cover all movements right up to the installation of each panel on the level of the building that it was required”, says Pace Pallet Services Managing Director Michael Mourad. “We worked on prototypes of a collapsible timber crate which was fully hinged for reuse for later projects in Australia for the Bluescope Facades division. We ended up with an A-frame style platform with end protector panels. We supplied it as a flat pack sub-assembly. The final assembly of the crate was done at their factory.”
